George Gittoes talks to Philip Adams about the ice-cream boys of Afganistan

Film maker, painter and photographer George Gittoes, met the ice-cream boys wandering the streets of Jalalabad in Afghanistan, selling ice popsicles. And through them he tells the story of the politics, the culture and society of Afghanistan. One of the boys sells ice-cream to help feed his father’s heroin habit, another wants to take his mother to Peshawar to get some blood tests as there are no pathologists in Afghanistan, and they all want Ashaf Ghani to become president, because he has promised to build more schools.
